How stories can explore kindness without preaching
Children can see the effect of a kind action more clearly when it belongs to the plot. A character notices a need, makes a choice, and something changes because of it.
Stories also show that kindness is not always the same action. Sometimes it means helping; sometimes listening; sometimes waiting; and sometimes respecting what another person says they need.
Ask what was noticed
Before talking about whether an action was kind, ask what the character noticed about someone else.
Look at consequences
What changed because one character helped, listened, waited, or included someone?
Allow imperfect kindness
Characters can mean well and still misunderstand. Repair can be part of the story too.
